Purpose of Smudging
Smudging, Smoke Cleansing & Space Clearing
Smudging, also often referred to as smoke cleansing or space clearing, is the practice of burning aromatic herbs, woods, resins or botanical blends and using the rising smoke as part of a personal, spiritual or reflective ritual.
You may also hear this practice described as sage clearing, smoke ceremony, herbal smoke cleansing, energy clearing or spiritual cleansing. While each name may carry its own cultural, spiritual or personal meaning, they all generally speak to the use of aromatic smoke as a way to cleanse, bless, release, reset or bring intention into a space.
For some cultures and traditions, smudging is a sacred ceremonial practice with specific protocols, teachings and meaning. In many Indigenous communities, these practices are deeply connected to culture, ancestry, land, ceremony and respect.
At With Good Intentions, our intention is not to claim ownership over sacred traditions or tell others how they should practise. Instead, we gently offer information, tools and guidance to support your own personal rituals of reflection, intention-setting, gratitude, cleansing and renewal.
The Power and Symbolism of Smoke
Smoke has held deep meaning across many cultures, faiths and spiritual traditions for thousands of years. It rises, moves, changes shape and slowly disappears, making it a powerful symbol of prayer, release, transformation and connection between the earthly and the divine.
In churches and other sacred spaces, incense has long been used to create an atmosphere of reverence, stillness and devotion. In Christian tradition, the rising smoke of incense is often seen as a symbol of prayers being lifted toward heaven, echoing the words of Psalm 141: “Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense.”
Fragrance also changes the way a space feels. Historically, aromatic smoke may have helped soften musty or unpleasant odours in old, enclosed or crowded sacred spaces. But beyond scent, smoke marked a shift — from ordinary time into sacred time, from everyday noise into prayer, ritual or reflection.
In smoke cleansing and personal ritual, the rising smoke may represent what we are releasing, blessing or inviting in. It can become a visual reminder of intentions being carried with care, prayers being lifted, or heavy energy being gently cleared.
At With Good Intentions, we see smoke as more than fragrance. It is movement, symbolism and intention — an invitation to pause, breathe, reflect and honour the space you are in.

A Note on Respect
Smoke rituals have been used by many cultures, communities and spiritual traditions throughout history. Some practices are deeply sacred and may belong to specific cultures, families or lineages. For this reason, it is important to approach smudging and smoke cleansing with respect, humility and awareness.
At With Good Intentions, we believe these practices can also become meaningful personal rituals when approached with care. You do not need to follow one particular tradition to create a quiet moment of cleansing, reflection, prayer, gratitude or renewal in your own space.
What matters is the spirit in which the practice is carried out. Be respectful of where these traditions come from, use what you have with care, practise safely, and allow your ritual to feel honest and meaningful to you.
There is no single right way to begin. Start simply, move gently, and let your practice grow with awareness and care.
Safety Reminder
Always burn herbs, woods and resins in a heat-resistant vessel and never leave burning materials unattended. Keep away from children, pets, curtains, loose fabrics and flammable surfaces. Use in a well-ventilated area and ensure all embers are fully extinguished after use.
